Google Tez Garnered Over 7.5 Million Users

Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Thursday during the Alphabet earnings call made several announcements around Google Tez, the payments app that the search giant had launched in India last month. Based on Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the NPCI's payments platform for the country, the Google Tez app leverages bank accounts for payments. During the earnings call, Pichai revealed that Google Tez already has over 7.5 million users in the five weeks since its launch in September. It has been used to make over 30 million transactions, Pichai added. "I'm really excited about the potential this brings for India's mostly cash-based economy," he said. Responding to a question about why Alphabet and Google's growth is burgeoning in Asia, Pichai said the companies have been "laying the foundation [h

It happens to the best of us. You buy a new mobile phone, you get a case, you try to be extra careful, but you drop it. Cracked screens happen often enough that most major carriers and device manufacturers have a separate section in their mobile protection plans just for replacing a broken display. According to a report on Phandroid, Verizon has just added the repair type to it's own mobile insurance plans with an affordable $30 deductible, down $20 from the previous $50 amount. Verizon's Total Mobile Protection Plan will run you $11 per month for a smartphone, $9 per month for a basic phone or tablet, and you can pay $33 per month to insure multiple devices. If you crack your screen, says Verizon, you may be able to get it repaired that same day, provi

When Shishir Mehrotra worked at YouTube, he was struck by the relatively pedestrian tools that kept the site running. Mehrotra, who served as the company’s head of product until he left in 2014, managed his team largely using a combination of Google Docs and Sheets. The system worked well enough, but the tools had been built for a previous age. Mehrotra began to fixate on a question: what would documents and spreadsheets look if they were invented today? Coda, a company Mehrotra co-founded with his fellow former Googler Alex DeNeui, represents his answer to that question. The company, which is announcing a private beta today after three years of secret development, makes a collaborative document editor that combines a word processor and a spreadsheet. It’s a versatile tool that Mehrotra

KRACK WiFi Security Fixes Control Tips

The revelation this week that a serious security flaw could affect WiFi networks in homes and businesses highlights how tough it can be for consumers to keep vital technology updated with secure software. Millions of households rely on wireless routers, laptops, and smartphones for their day-to-day lives. It's relatively routine to update a laptop—many devices are updated automatically. But other devices go years without getting updated by their owners, slowly gathering dust while missing advances in security. The new WiFi vulnerability was dubbed KRACK (for Key Reinstallation Attack)by its discoverers, a pair of researchers at a Belgian university. It could allow attackers to access private data flowing through an encrypted WiFi network. The data could include usernames, passwords, cr

Facebook wants tbh to be its next Instagram. Today, Facebook announced it’s acquiring positivity-focused polling startup tbh and will allow it to operate somewhat independently with its own brand. tbh had scored 5 million downloads and 2.5 million daily active users in the past nine weeks with its app that lets people anonymously answer kind-hearted multiple-choice questions about friends who then receive the poll results as compliments. You see questions like “Best to bring to a party?,” “Their perseverance is admirable?” and “Could see becoming a poet?” with your uploaded contacts on the app as answer choices. tbh has racked up more than 1 billion poll answers since officially launching in limited states in August, mostly from teens and high school students, and spent weeks topping t

How to make your passwords worthless to cyber thieves

When IBM introduced the first laptop with a built-in fingerprint sensor in 2004, it sparked a wave of product development in biometrics. At the time, a colleague delighted in fooling sensor after sensor with a rubber replica of his own finger. Everything is relative. Today, in a world where cyber thieves routinely pry into valuable data stores from far-away lands, compromised passwords are 10 times more likely, according to Verizon, to be the culprit than physical interaction with computers, smartphones and other connected devices. Even the worst fingerprint reader, in fact, can help make those passwords more secure by acting as a second line of defense. The best way to make your accounts more secure is to render your passwords worthless to cyber thieves, by requiring proof in addition

T-Mobile eliminates free unlimited LTE perk

News
T-Mobile is bringing to an end one of its more generous perks that gave customers traveling to Canada and Mexico free unlimited LTE service. Starting November 12th, T-Mobile is putting a 5GB data cap on LTE usage when traveling outside the US in North America. You’ll still get data after the 5GB limit is hit, but it’ll be throttled to the near-unusable “Simple Global” speed tier, or about 128Kbps. (T-Mobile One Plus customers get 256Kbps, but that’s not much better.) “Mobile Without Borders is an incredible benefit and allows customers to stay connected when traveling in Canada and Mexico. In order to prevent usage beyond the intent of the product, we implemented a limit on the amount of monthly 4G LTE data,” the carrier explains on its FAQ page. “Less than 1 percent of people with this
